Dpoy Odds Nfl
With the 2019 regular season officially in the rear-view mirror, it’s time to take a look at the 2019 NFL Defensive Player of the Year candidates. Aaron Donald is attempting to become the first player to capture the award in three straight seasons, while T.J. Watt is trying to join his older brother as the first pair of siblings to each be honored.
The result is Donald’s NFL DPOY odds improving from +188 to -143, while Watt, who was favored last week, fell from +166 to +340 December 9 Aaron Donald and TJ Watt’s NFL DPOY odds continue shortening, while Watt maintains a slim lead over the two-time recipient entering Week 14. Last year's NFL DPOY winner, Patriots cornerback Stephen Gilmore is fifth at +1,600. Who are some long shots who could win the NFL DPOY Award? With sacks being one of the sexiest stats for defensive players to put up, there are several pass rushers on the NFL DPOY odds board that could provide great value.
Shaquil Barrett and Chandler Jones were by far the two most productive pass rushers, although Stephon Gilmore’s prowess in the New England secondary has him currently sitting atop the NFL DPOY odds sheet. Is the Patriots shutdown corner a lock to hoist the trophy, or can one the others sneak up and steal the award?
Let’s take a look at the NFL Defensive Player of the Year odds and my predictions for the 2019 award.
Stephon Gilmore is leading the pack, and I can’t say that I’m surprised. With that being said, I am a bit perplexed as to why he’s such a massive favorite over his competitors. There’s no denying how stellar Gilmore was for Bill Belichick in 2019, but it’s hard not to be enthralled by the gaudy statistics of these pass rushers. It’s difficult to ignore the utter dominance of Aaron Donald.
I’ll make a case for each individual before unveiling my DPOY prediction.
Stephon Gilmore
Key Stats: 20 pass deflections, 6 interceptions, 2 touchdowns
Stephon Gilmore led the NFL with 20 pass deflections, and he tied for a league-high 6 interceptions. He’s also one of three defenders who scored multiple touchdowns, but here’s the real reason why Stephon Gilmore is the favorite to win the 2019 NFL Defensive Player of the Year award.
The 29-year-old former Bills cornerback was the anchor of a defense that ranked first in yards allowed and points surrendered. Gilmore may have entered the year in the discussion of who the best cornerback in the National Football League is, but he finished the season leaving us no doubt that he’s the top dog.
Key Stats: 14.5 sacks, 23 tackles for loss, 8 forced fumbles
If you are wondering how Mike Tomlin was able to hold the fort down in Pittsburgh and almost make the playoffs, look no further than the heart and soul of his defense, T.J. Watt.
Forget about living in the shadow of his older brother. T.J. is categorically one of the premier outside linebackers in the sport. Not only does the eye test support that claim, but the data backs it up as well. Here’s a guy who led the NFL with 8 forced fumbles, led the AFC in sacks, and tied for second in tackles for loss. And at just 25 years of age, this kid is just starting to scratch the surface.
Key Stats: 19.5 sacks, 23 tackles for loss, 6 forced fumbles
Shaquil Barrett entered Week 17 tied with Warren Sapp for the Bucs franchise record with 16.5 sacks. Wanting to end the year on a bang, Barrett racked up three more sacks to finish with 19.5, which happened to be the most in the NFL.
Undrafted in 2014, the 27-year-old linebacker had never registered more than 5.5 sacks in a season up until this year. What was Denver’s loss turned out to be Tampa Bay’s gain, as Shaq’s breakout season has earned him a ton of coin in the upcoming offseason.
Defensive Player Of The Year Odds Nfl
Although he will be pursued heavily in the coming weeks by numerous organizations, Bruce Arians made it clear that Barrett will be an integral part of the Buccaneers’ future.
Key Stats: 24 tackles for loss, 12.5 sacks, 1 safety
Aaron Donald’s sack total might not rival that of Shaquil Barrett’s, but keep in mind that Donald is a defensive tackle who does his damage from inside the trenches. He also gets double-teamed on a consistent basis due to the simple fact that opposing offenses are aware of how dominant Aaron is.
The Rams had a down year, and therefore, Donald could get overlooked, but make no mistake about who the best interior lineman in football was in 2019. In fact, there have been whispers among NFL scouts and GMs that #99 in Los Angeles is the single-best football player in all of the NFL.
Key Stats: 19 sacks, 8 forced fumbles, 5 pass deflections
Chandler Jones was making plays all over the gridiron for the Cardinals in 2019. Whether that was disrupting the quarterback’s rhythm in the pocket or batting balls down in the middle of the field, the younger brother of UFC phenomenon Jon “Bones” Jones was “Mr. Do It All” for the Arizona defense.
On top of ending the year with a whopping 19 sacks, Chandler tied for the league lead with eight forced fumbles and managed to bat down five balls. The outside linebacker/edge rusher was named as December’s NFC Defensive Player of the Month, so it’s pretty clear that he ended his monster campaign on a high note.
Even though Stephon Gilmore has built up a substantial lead in terms of the betting odds, it’s important to note that a defensive back hasn’t won the NFL Defensive Player of the Year award since Troy Polamalu was honored back in 2010.
Nevertheless, here’s why I think that streak will come to an end.
As obvious as it is to everyone in the football community that Aaron Donald is a serious force to be reckoned with, his statistics will be overshadowed by others on this list. And speaking of the others, it’s so hard to determine which pass rusher was the best in 2019.
T.J. Watt, Shaquil Barrett, and Chandler Jones all put up ridiculous numbers, but I could see the trio splitting a lot of the votes. And aside from that, four of the five players on the BetOnline betting sheet aren’t part of the playoffs.
On the other hand, Stephon Gilmore is getting ready for the Patriots vs. Titans Wild Card matchup and has the advantage of still being in the limelight.
I wouldn’t go crazy with this wager, but I do predict that Stephon Gilmore will win Defensive Player of the Year for 2019.
